Barcelona, April 2025 – The Barcelona Zettascale Lab (BZL), led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), proudly announces the submission of Cinco Ranch, the fifth-generation processor in the Lagarto series, for fabrication using Intel Foundry’s cutting-edge Intel 3 technology node.
Cinco Ranch is a RISC-V-based industrial-grade SoC that integrates three custom cores and a vector processing unit developed in collaboration with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and Intel. It represents the most advanced and power-efficient design in the Lagarto family to date.

🔧 Architectural Highlights:
-
Lagarto Ka Core – Dual-issue, 10-stage out-of-order scalar pipeline
-
Lagarto Ox Core – High-performance, 11-stage, 4-issue out-of-order core
-
Sargantana Core – Energy-efficient 7-stage in-order pipeline with custom SIMD extensions
-
Vitruvius++ VPU – 16-lane decoupled vector unit, RISC-V Vector Extension 1.0
-
Memory & Interfaces – DDR5, PCIe Gen3, 2MB SRAM scratchpad, and advanced peripheral controllers
-
Cache Hierarchy – Three levels, including a shared L3 based on OpenPiton
🔬 Fabrication Node: Intel 3
📏 Chip Area: 16 mm² (BSC IPs: 3.2 mm²)

🧠 Ecosystem Integration and Timeline
Cinco Ranch consolidates the evolution of the Lagarto series with a robust hardware-software stack designed for HPC, AI, and edge computing. Below, you’ll find the development timeline of the Lagarto family alongside the full BZL stack.
🌍 A Strategic European Effort
Cinco Ranch is a landmark achievement in BZL’s mission to lead Europe’s charge in RISC-V processor innovation. Supported by the Spanish Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service and the European Union through the PERTE Chip program and NextGenerationEU, this milestone reflects BZL’s commitment to energy efficiency, sustainability, and technological sovereignty.
