Barcelona, November 2025 — Barcelona Zettascale Lab representatives, together with other members of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, received around 50 participants from the Government of Catalonia, through ACCIÓ and semiconductor industry leaders and political authorities from the European Semiconductor Regions Alliance (ESRA) on the occasion of the handover of the ESRA presidency from Piemonte to Catalonia. The event served to highlight Catalonia’s growing leadership in Europe’s microelectronics and high-performance computing ecosystem, with a special focus on the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS).
A central theme of the visit was the BSC’s role within the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, the European Union’s initiative to develop world-class supercomputing infrastructure and strengthen digital sovereignty. As part of EuroHPC, BSC contributes to designing next-generation processors and developing open, energy-efficient technologies that underpin Europe’s digital competitiveness.
The delegation also explored BSC’s cutting-edge work in processor design, particularly through projects related to RISC-V architecture.
Miquel Moretó, the coordinator of the hardware activities at the Barcelona Zettascale Lab project (BZL) delivered a presentation on the project and RISC-V, explaining how open hardware standards are transforming Europe’s semiconductor strategy and enabling technological independence.
Attendees had the opportunity to explore the project’s boards and chip designs firsthand, a highlight that sparked significant interest.
The evolution toward AI Factories, and BSC’s role in this initiative was outlined to show how Catalonia is positioning itself as a hub for artificial intelligence research and industrial innovation and how its collaborations are reinforcing its commitment to European collaboration in semiconductors, supercomputing, and AI.
