Barcelona, July 4, 2025 – The Barcelona Zettascale Lab (BZL) team gathered this week for an internal event to celebrate a significant achievement in our journey: the successful tape-out and forthcoming arrival of the Cinco Ranch processor. This internal presentation marked a moment of pride and anticipation, as team members shared the final design details and the strategic steps leading to this milestone.
This celebration comes on the heels of the recent announcement that Cinco Ranch, the most advanced processor in the Lagarto series, was sent for manufacturing using state-of-the-art Intel 3 technology. This step represents a major leap forward in our mission to develop high-performance, energy-efficient processors based on the open-source RISC-V architecture.

The excitement within the lab is palpable as we prepare for the next critical phase: post-silicon validation. Our readiness is bolstered by the recent integration of the Hawk Canyon V2 testbeds. These advanced development boards are now part of our cutting-edge infrastructure and will be instrumental in rigorously testing and validating the very first Cinco Ranch prototypes, which are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
During the internal gathering, project leaders highlighted the collaborative effort and dedication of the entire BZL team. “This is a testament to the hard work and innovative spirit of our researchers and engineers,” commented Miquel Moretó, one of the principal investigators. “Sending Cinco Ranch to fabrication was a huge step, and now, with the Hawk Canyon boards ready and waiting, we are perfectly positioned to hit the ground running as soon as the chips are in our hands.”

The development of Cinco Ranch is a cornerstone of the BZL project’s ambition to drive the future of zettascale computing with a focus on technological sovereignty and sustainability. The successful validation of this chip will not only be a major achievement for our lab but will also have a significant impact on both the academic and industrial fields, paving the way for the next generation of European high performance processors.
The BZL team is eagerly awaiting the delivery of the Cinco Ranch silicon. We look forward to sharing further updates as we embark on the exciting validation process and bring this processor to life and we integrate it with our HPC software stack.
